Moonlight Mandarin exists because Kira spent years following the wrong method — and eventually figured out what actually works.
My name is Kira, and I've been through every frustrating stage of learning Chinese.
I followed the standard curriculum. The textbooks. The vocabulary lists. The grammar rules taught completely out of context. Like most students, I worked hard and did what I was told.
The problem was the system itself. Standard Chinese courses start by oversimplifying everything — then suddenly jump to very formal, almost literary Chinese with no middle ground. The real, modern, conversational Mandarin that people actually use every day? Nobody teaches that.
I was learning random words with no context. Grammar rules with no situation to attach them to. And I still couldn't hold a real conversation. Years of study, and still freezing up the moment a native speaker said something unexpected.
What changed everything was 12 years actually living and working in China — using Mandarin every single day in real situations. Slowly, through trial and error and thousands of real conversations, I figured out what actually moves the needle.
It wasn't more grammar. It wasn't more flashcards. It was learning vocabulary attached to real topics, in context, in small enough groups that I actually had to speak.
Consistency over intensity. A little every day. Real Chinese, not formal Chinese. Topics that made the language feel alive.
When I started teaching, I built the school I wished I'd had. Not around textbooks, but around real topics. Not around drilling grammar in isolation, but around using language to actually communicate.
Everything we do at Moonlight Mandarin comes from that core insight: the reason most people plateau isn't lack of effort. It's the wrong method. Fix the method, and Chinese stops feeling impossibly hard.
I now teach from Northern Ireland with a team of brilliant native Chinese teachers. Together, we've helped students from dozens of countries go from hesitant to genuinely fluent.
If you've been studying Chinese and still don't feel like you can really speak it — you're in the right place.
We don't teach Chinese so you can pass a test. We teach it so you can use it — with real people, in real situations, on real topics. That's the only measure that matters.
Words learned in isolation are words forgotten. Words learned attached to a real situation, a real story, a real feeling — those stick. Everything we teach is in context, always.
30 minutes every day will always beat 3 hours once a week. We design our programmes around this — short, daily, consistent practice that fits into a real life.
Max 3 students in a group. Not because it's more expensive to run — because it's the only way you actually speak. In a class of 20, you spend 58 minutes listening and 2 minutes talking. That's not learning.
We don't teach the Chinese in textbooks from the 1990s. We teach what native speakers actually say — the vocabulary, the patterns, the expressions that make you sound like a real person, not a language student.
If you're not progressing, the answer isn't to try harder. It's to find a better method. We've obsessed over that method for years — so you don't have to figure it out alone.
14+ years experience, over 1,500 students. Warm, structured and deeply knowledgeable — makes complex things feel manageable.
Patient, reactive and encouraging. Guides students to the answer rather than just giving it — every student feels genuinely understood.
Calm, culturally rich. Studied in Germany, now in Ireland — connects especially well with European students.
Master's in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Precise, thorough and passionate about accuracy.
